Cells in population or multicellular organisms possess a phenomenon in which they lose their vigor. Why is this cell vigor-loss mechanism conserved in multicellular organisms? During development, a large amount of programmed cell death occurs, playing a crucial role in processes such as morphogen switching, morphogenetic movements, and the elimination of cells that have failed to differentiate. In adults, cell competition functions as a tumor suppression mechanism by removing precancerous cells. Additionally, maintaining stem cells involves inducing selective cell death to preserve their quality. Organisms have a maximum lifespan beyond which they cannot survive. Although aging has been evolutionarily conserved, our understanding of its biological role is still limited.
In addition to cell death and organismal death, cells, and organisms have developed various responses to cope with environmental changes and stress, which can lead to a decline in vigor. In extreme cases, they reduce their overall metabolism and enter states such as dormancy or hibernation.
The aim of this conference is to discuss how the regulation of cell vigor influences phenotypes at the level of cell populations and organisms, drawing on research in areas such as cell death, control of cell fate, stem cells, cellular stress responses, aging, and hibernation.
Approaches to researching cell vigor span a wide range of fields, including live imaging, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and metabolism. In order to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the regulation of cell vigor, we look forward to research exchanges across the hierarchy of technologies and research subjects in order to understand the mechanisms of cell vigor.
